Vitamins protect against hearing loss

A mixture of vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, and magnesium has been shown to attenuate hearing loss in animals subjected to loud noise. This suggests antioxidant vitamin supplementation is likely very useful for all you personal audio junkies out there.
Here’s the press release:

Sirt1 regulates Heat Shock Protein 1 (HSP1) to protect cells

Richard Morimoto et al. from Northwestern University published a paper showing that Sirt1 regulates the activity of Heat Shock Factor 1 (HSF1) in cells, possibly explaining some of the protective and anti-aging properties associated with Sirt1.
Here’s the link to the article in question: Stress-Inducible Regulation of Heat Shock Factor 1 by the Deacetylase SIRT1

Mouse study suggests new anti-aging modality

I came across this article today titled “Disruption of the Ang II type 1 receptor promotes longevity in mice”, which is available for free in PDF form for those interested in having a look.
Essentially, the researchers examined the effect of knocking out the Angiotensin (Ang) II type 1 receptor in a bunch of mice and [...]

Smoking and UV exposure reduce melanoma risk

In a strange twist, researchers from the Sunlight, Nutrition, and Health Research Center (SUNARC) publishing in Anticancer Research have discovered that one’s risk of developing melanoma is inversely related to long-term smoking and exposure to UV light!
Which is to say, you’re less likely to get melanoma if you spend all day out in the sun [...]

Fish oil prevents atherosclerosis

New research from Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) has shown that fish-oil rich diets can prevent the accumulation of fat in the aorta, even when total dietary fat intake remains high.
Their research showed that mice fed a high fat diet that was also high in fish oil accumulated much less fat in their aortas, the [...]

Arginine supplementation to fight obesity

An interesting press release was brought to my attention today talking about a study showing that L-arginine (an amino acid) supplementation reduces fat gain in overfed rats.
Basically, the two ratty cohorts were fed more than sufficient, except one group was supplemented with arginine and the other alanine (another amino acid) as a control. The rats [...]

Quercetin reduces colon cancer risk

Quercetin, the small molecule that typically rubs shoulders with friends like resveratrol and EpiGalloCatechinGallate (ECGC), not just in my supplements cupboard but in anti-aging experiments and SIRT-activation tests, has now been shown to reduce the risk of colon cancer by researchers funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Vegetable and Fruit Improvement Center [...]
